    • 10 Years of Cardiac Intervention at TMCH: A MilestoneThanjavur, April 8, 2026 — A decade ago, on April 8, 2016, Thanjavur Medical College Hospital (TMCH) achieved a groundbreaking milestone in cardiac care.
    • For the first time in the hospital’s history, a permanent pacemaker was successfully implanted using a C-arm fluoroscopy unit.
    • The landmark procedure was performed by Dr. Sivasankar and Dr. Ravishankar, ushering in the era of interventional cardiology at TMCH.
    • On that historic day, three patients — including a child — benefitted from the intervention. One of the beneficiaries was the father of staff nurse making the achievement even more meaningful for the TMCH family.
    • The success was made possible through strong institutional support and seamless inter-departmental collaboration. Dr. Elangovan, who was the Dean of TMCH at the time, provided crucial leadership and encouragement. Former Dean Dr. Shankar Narayanan offered valuable guidance from the outset. Dr. Ramasamy, then Head of the Department of Neurosurgery, extended full cooperation.
    • The cardiology department colleagues — Dr. Kannappan, Dr. Jaishankar, Dr. Sreenivasan, and Dr. Anand — played active roles in planning and execution. Dr. Marudhurai from the Department of Vascular Surgery also lent active support.
    • The nursing team, represented by Mrs. Shanthi of the Nursing Association, worked tirelessly to ensure smooth patient preparation and care in the procedure room. Postgraduate students Dr. Kavin and Dr. Ranghabhashyam contributed significantly by mobilizing patients, counselling families, and assisting during the procedures.What began as a pioneering effort in a government medical college setting has grown into a decade of dedicated cardiac intervention services, bringing advanced care closer to the people of the Cauvery Delta region.
    • The same visionary spirit that drove Dr. Sivasankar and Dr. Ravishankar to push boundaries at TMCH ten years ago continues to shine brightly.
    • Their commitment to advancing cardiac care recently culminated in another historic achievement: the successful performance of the first heart transplant in the Delta region at Apex Heart Hospital, Thanjavur.
